Job Application Checklist

Online applications time out, and half-finished ones rarely get completed. Gather these before you open the first form and you will finish each application in one sitting.

Identity and contact

• Full legal name as it appears on your ID
• Phone number with a working, professional voicemail
• Email address you check daily (ideally firstname.lastname)
• Current address and ZIP code
• Work authorization status (you will complete Form I-9 after an offer, not before)

Work history

• Employer names, cities and the months and years you worked at each
• Job titles, two or three duties per role, and a reason for leaving
• Supervisor names and whether they may be contacted
• Gaps explained in one honest sentence each

Education and credentials

• Highest level of education and school name
• Licenses and certifications with expiry dates
• Driver's license class, if the role involves driving

Availability

• Days and hours you can genuinely work
• Earliest start date
• Shift preferences and any dates you cannot work

Documents (if asked)

• One-page résumé as .docx or PDF
• Plain-text version of your résumé for copy-and-paste fields
• Reference list (see our reference list template)
• Portfolio or work samples where relevant

Before you submit

• Job title and job ID written down for your tracker
• Answers to screening questions match your availability and experience
• Every field proofread once
• Follow-up date set for 7 to 10 days from today
