Interviews for store, warehouse, care and support roles are short and practical. Interviewers want to know three things: will you show up, can you work with people, and can you follow the process. Prepare for those and you'll be ahead of most candidates.
What the interview usually looks like
- Phone or video screen (10–20 minutes): availability, start date, basic fit.
- In-person or video interview (20–40 minutes): behavioural questions and a walk-through of the role.
- Group interview or hiring event: common at large employers; several candidates are interviewed together with short exercises.
The questions you will almost certainly get
| Question | What they're really asking | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Tell me about yourself | Can you summarise clearly? | 60 seconds: past, strengths, why this role |
| Why do you want this job? | Will you stay? | One reason about the work, one about the employer |
| Describe a difficult customer or coworker | Do you stay calm? | Situation, what you did, how it ended |
| Tell me about a mistake | Are you honest and do you fix things? | Pick a real one with a fix and a lesson |
| What is your availability? | Can we schedule you? | Be exact and realistic |
| Why did you leave your last job? | Any red flags? | Short, factual, no blame |
Use the three-part answer
For every "tell me about a time" question: the situation in one sentence, what you did in two or three, the result in one. Practise four examples out loud and you can adapt them to most questions.
Prepare two questions to ask
- What does a typical shift look like in the first month?
- How is training handled?
- What are the next steps and when will I hear back?
Logistics that decide outcomes
- Confirm time, place or link, and the interviewer's name the day before.
- Dress one step smarter than the workplace.
- Arrive ten minutes early; for video, test your camera, microphone and background.
- Bring two copies of your résumé and your reference list.
