A well-tuned alert does most of your searching for you. The trick is to set alerts on two or three sites, use the titles employers actually write, and keep them narrow enough that you read every email. Here's how to set them up on the sites that matter.
First, choose your search terms
- Search each site manually for ten minutes and note the exact titles that appear for the work you want. "Fulfillment associate", "warehouse associate" and "material handler" are different alerts.
- Pick a radius you can actually commute: 10 to 15 miles for shift work, 25 or more for salaried roles.
- Create one alert per title rather than one broad alert. Broad alerts become noise and get ignored.
Indeed
- Run your search with title and location.
- Use the "Date posted" filter and set it to the last 7 days.
- Click the bell or "Get new jobs for this search by email" and confirm the email.
- In alert settings, choose daily frequency.
- Search Jobs with your title and location; add the "Remote" filter if relevant.
- Toggle "Set alert" at the top of the results.
- Choose daily email or notification. Turn on "Easy Apply" only if you also plan to apply on employer sites, which is usually the stronger application.
ZipRecruiter
- Create a free account and complete your profile; ZipRecruiter's matching uses it.
- Run your search and click "Create job alert".
- Review the suggested matches it emails; they are often broader than your alert.
USAJOBS
- Create a login.gov account and a USAJOBS profile.
- Run a search, then choose "Save search" and set the email frequency.
- Filter by hiring path (for example, "Open to the public") so you only see roles you can apply for.
Employer portals
Most large employers' careers sites offer "job alerts" or a "talent community". Sign up on the portals of five employers you'd like to work for; many openings post there days before they reach the aggregators.
Keep it readable. Three sites, one or two titles each, daily frequency. If you're receiving more than 20 postings a day, narrow the titles or radius.
Acting on alerts
- Apply to fresh postings within 48 hours; many employers review in the order received.
- Follow the link to the employer's own site where offered.
- Log every application in your tracker.
